Cartoonist, Reg Smythe, the creator of the character Andy Capp was a local lad. This 5ft high statue of Andy Capp can be seen near the Harbour of Refuge in Croft Terrace. The statue was financed by the North Hartlepool Partnership at a cost of £20,000. The Daily Mirror, the home of Andy capp since 1957 donated £2,000 toards the cost. Reg,s widow Jean officially unveiled the statue in June 2007.
